Point my domain to the Church Web Works servers?

Using your registar's control panel point your DNS servers to:
Primary DNS: NS.RACKSPACE.COM
Secondary DNS: NS2.RACKSPACE.COM

This will generally take 8-24 hours for all DNS servers to be updated. Make sure to email support@churchwebworks.com when you do this. As our support team must add your domain to our DNS for correct routing.

Am I resposible for the routing of my Domain?

The customer is responsible for updating the DNS information for the domain name at the registrar it is registered with.
If your domain name is registered through Network Solutions or Register.com you will find instructions for transferring in this FAQ list.
If your domain name is registered through another registrar you will need to contact that registrar and give them the following DNS information.

Our name servers are:
ns.rackspace.com
ns2.rackspace.com

NOTE:
Please send an email to support@churchwebworks.com if you change the routing on your domain. Your domain must be setup in the Church Web Works DNS and Web Servers for your site to be found.
Please specify your domain and a contact email and phone number when sending this information.

How do I FTP to my domain?
The first thing you will need is an ftp program. You can download AceFTP here. This is a freeware application.

Once you have installed this you will need to login to the server using the username and password sent to your account admin. If you need these please send an email with your account number and churchname to support@churchwebworks.com, subject ftp login info request, we will resend your login info.

Once succesfully logged into the server, you are presented with two windows at the bottom of the screen. The left window is your computer, the right window is the server.

In the right window, go into the directory called httpdocs, once here you will see a folder named webstat and an index.html file (Do not delete or change these files)

Create a new directory, by right clicking in the window and selecting 'create new folder'. This folder will contain your downloadable documents. You can create as many folders as you need, for example: forms. Please note that this system is unix based and file and directory names are case sensitive. Also no spaces or other characters should be used in the file or directory names.

Once you have created you directory, go into this new directory by double clicking it. Navigate to the file you wish to upload, example: myfirstupload.pdf, in the left window. Then simply drag the file over into the right window.

The file will then be uploaded and ready for use.

To link to this file from your church web works control panel, the URL is as follows:
http://www.yourdomainname.org/forms/myfirstupload.pdf
When you visitors click on this link they will download and view the file called 'myfirstupload.pdf'

Please contact support@churchwebworks.com if you have any additional questions.

What is FTP?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. Whether you know it or not, you most likely use FTP all the time.

When downloading a file from the Internet you're actually transferring the file to your computer from another computer over the Internet. This is why the T (transfer) is in FTP. You may not know where the computer is that the file is coming from but you most likely know it's URL or Internet address.

What is an FTP Client?

An FTP Client is software that is designed to transfer files back-and-forth between two computers over the Internet. It needs to be installed on your computer and can only be used with a live connection to the Internet.

We have a link to AceFTP a freeware ftp client for Windows, located under the downloads area of the support site.

What is an FTP Site?

An FTP site is like a large filing cabinet. With a traditional filing cabinet, the person who does the filing has the option to label and organize the files how ever they see fit. They also decide which files to keep locked and which remain public. It is the same with an FTP site.

The virtual 'key' to get into an FTP site is the UserID and Password. If the creator of the FTP site is willing to give everyone access to the files, the UserID is 'anonymous' and the Password is your e-mail address (e.g. name@domain.com). If the FTP site is not public, there will be a unique UserID and Password for each person who is granted access.

When connecting with an FTP Client, uploads and downloads couldn't be easier, and you have added security and additional features. For one, you're able to to resume a download that did not successfully finish, which is a very nice feature for people using dial-up connections who frequently loose their Internet connection.

Can I put streaming media on my church web site?

Although streaming media is not available on the Church Web Works servers, you are able to create an audio or video file that will begin to play while it is downloading. This is called pseudo streaming.

To create these files you will need to encode your audio or video using Quicktime, Microsoft's Windows Media Encoder or the RealNetworks encoder.

Windows Media Example:
We took a 47 minute (476 MB on CD) sermon and compressed it using Windows Media Encoder.
File settings were a Web Server (progressive download) type. Selected Voice Quality audio (CBR) @ 19Kbps.

Final Result: A great sounding 5.7 MB .wma file.

The file was then uploaded to our web space via ftp. And then linked from our resources area – When you click on the link, it opens in Windows Media Player and starts playing almost instantly, even with a slower or dialup connection.

You can download Windows Media Encoder for free from the MicroSoft Web Site:
